Click Here for DetailsIf you have arthritis knee pain from OA, you have several options when it comes to pain relief and treatment. Basically your options are as follows:
Medication
The first thing you should do is ask your doctor about pain relief meds such as aspirin, Tylenol and NSAIDs. Although they won’t reverse the wear and tear in your knees, they will reduce or eliminate the pain to allow you to function better and more comfortably.
Weight Loss
Secondly, if you’re overweight, losing some weight will help take some of the pressure off your knees. If you need weight loss advice, you definitely won’t regret checking out this site here.
Knee Braces
Another way to reduce pressure to your knee joints is by wearing knee braces. If the cartilage on a certain side of your knee is worn out, you can use an unloader knee brace to unload the pressure on the bad part by putting the pressure on the good part of your joint.
Whether or not knee braces will help you depends on your present condition and how far your arthritis has progressed. For example, if all your cartilage is already gone and your joint is rubbing bone-to-bone then knee braces will not help you.
Also, be aware that if you wear a knee brace, your muscles may become weaker because the brace will be taking the stress instead of your muscles, which will make you more and more dependent on the brace.
Please note that knee braces cannot be used as a permanent solution to your problem – it can only slow the progression of your OA. The best thing to do would be to ask your doctor about knee braces to see what s/he recommends.
Synvisc
Synvisc is a lubrication fluid that is injected into the knee to provide cushioning for the joint. Many people who have had these injections, didn’t regret their decision. They reported less pain (in many cases much less) and more mobility, and that the injections weren’t painful. This may be the solution for you if your cartilage is pretty much gone and you’re going “bone-on-bone”.
The downside of synvisc injections is that they’re expensive and only provide relief for around half a year. Most people who choose this option do so because they want to postpone knee surgery for as long as possible. If you do decide to talk to your doctor about synvisc, you may want to bring up the topic of cost. It may be a lot cheaper for you to buy synvisc online yourself and bring it in for your doctor to inject for you. You can find synvisc on this website here. Knee Surgery
Since knee braces and synvisc are only temporary measures, eventually you may need to resort to knee surgery.
Although most people don’t like the thought of getting surgery and try to postpone it for as long as they can, it may be to your benefit NOT to put this off. Most people who have had joint replacement surgery reported excellent results – drastically reduced or complete elimination of pain, and no need for support when they walk.
Knee joint replacement surgery involves attaching a prosthesis, which is made of ceramic, plastic, or metal, to the ends of both bones that form the knee joint. The result is that when you move, the two pieces of the prosthesis rub together instead of the bone-on-bone rubbing that happens before the surgery.
The prosthesis will last you 10-15 years (up to 20 years if you’re lucky) before you’ll need another surgery (because all the rubbing will loosen the prosthesis gradually).
I’ve heard people ask themselves “why didn’t I do this sooner?” after they’ve had the surgery. So definitely talk to your doctor about this if you’re already going bone-on-bone or are getting close to it. This may be a better solution compared to spending the money on knee braces and synvisc to postpone the inevitable.
