Glucosamine and chondroitin are often considered the building blocks of cartilage and the connective tissues.  Glucosamine is generally combined with chondroitin to help people suffering from osteoarthritis.  Studies has proven the effectiveness of this combination in the improvement of arthritis.

Side Effects of Glucosamine and Chondroitin

However, as with the use of any supplement, side effects are always possible.  Glucosamine and chondoitin Sulfate is generally very well tolerated by most of those in clinical trials. In extremely rare cases, the following side effects have been noticed:

-Slightly elevated blood pressure
-Gastrointestinal pain
-Motor uneasiness
-Slight breathing difficulty
-Rash
-Mild headache
-Nausea
-Upset stomach

Perhaps the most common side effect of glucosamine includes an increase of intestinal gas and soft stools, although the probability of this happening is extremely rare. Studies on animals have found that glucosamine could have a worsening effect on insulin levels, one of the main causes of diabetes. While no such problems have been found in humans, diabetics taking these supplements should exercise caution and monitor their blood sugar levels regularly while on this supplement.

Individuals who intend on taking these supplements and are also on blood thinners or aspirin medication therapy should definitely consult with their physician before taking these supplements. Pregnant women or women who intend on getting pregnant should not take these supplements since the effects of these supplements a growing fetus is not entirely known. Breast-feeding women should completely avoid taking these supplements.

Since the long term effects of these supplements are not well known, children should not be given these supplements. While the long-term side effects of these supplements are currently bring evaluated and studied, many physicians agree that the combined benefits of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate outweigh the side effects when administered to cure/treat or contain osteoarthritis.

Glucosamine and chondroitin are by far the most nutritional supplement for lubricating, maintaining and protecting the joints. Glucosamine also works by helping to prevent joint mobility and slowing the deterioration of cartilage in the joints. Many research studies have shown glucosamine to help provide relief of pain in the joints and also improvement of symptoms in people suffering from osteoarthritis , although these effects will not show immediately and may take several months to show up.

Medical Studies on Glucosamine and Chondroitin

Studies conducted in the past have shown promising results for Glucosamine and Chondroitin in their abilities to improve the OA condition. Volume 277, December 16, 2006 issue of the Pharmaceutical Journal devoted an entire article on the effectiveness of arthritis supplements. Here’s a part of the conclusion:

“…the current evidence base is perhaps best for the use of…glucosamine (and possibly chondroitin) in OA. However, a number of more recently investigated compounds, for example methylsulfonylmethane [note: MSM] and S-adenosyl-L-methionine [note: SAMe], have also shown promise, particularly in OA.”

BMJ, an online organization consisting of a panel of medical professionals, examined the results of 16 medical studies that were conducted on glucosamine and its effects on osteoarthritis, and summarized these results in a concise, easy-to-understand manner. This is the conclusion they came up with:

Glucosamine is more effective than selected non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and placebo for reducing pain in patients with osteoarthritis. Glucosamine is more effective than placebo for improving function (when measured as a dichotomous outcome).” (Read the article here.)

Another study shows that the glucosamine-chondroitin combination may work best for patients experiencing moderate to severe pain: “For a subset of participants with moderate-to-severe pain, glucosamine combined with chondroitin sulfate provided statistically significant pain relief compared with placebo, about 79% had a 20% or greater reduction in pain versus about 54% for placebo.”
